President Election 2017 Result Live Vote Counting & Updates

President Election 2017 Result Live Vote Counting & Updates: India is all set to get its 14th President as the counting of ballots for the presidential election has finally begun with the numbers stacked in favour of the ruling NDA’s nominee Ram Nath Kovind over opposition’s candidate Meira Kumar. The name of the next occupant of the Rashtrapati Bhawan would be known by around 5.00 pm. First, the ballot box of Parliament House would be opened, and then, the ballot boxes received from states would be counted on alphabetical basis. No matter which way this election swings, India will have its second Dalit President after KR Narayanan. Before the voting, Opposition nominee Meira Kumar said this election was a battle of ideologies and not caste.

The Counting will begin at 11 am across four tables simultaneously. There will be eight rounds of counting, and announcements will be made after every round. Polling to choose the successor to President Pranab Mukherjee, who demits office on July 24, was held simultaneously at 32 polling stations — one in Parliament House and one each in 29 state assemblies and two union territories with assemblies.

Lok Sabha Secretary General Anoop Mishra is the Returning Officer for the election and will issue the certificate to the winning candidate. Officials said the seals of ballot boxes will be opened on Thursday in the presence of representatives of the two candidates — former Bihar Governor Kovind and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar — and the observers of the Election Commission.

3:50 pm: There are reports of cross-voting coming in from Gujarat although we cannot confirm anything at this point. Kovind may end up getting more votes from Gujarat than was expected due to cross-voting by Congress MLAs. Is Shankarsinh Vaghela becoming a factor?

3:45 pm: People on Twitter have started sending their wishes to Kovind, the next President of the country. As many of you know, the contest had ended before it could even start. With non-NDA parties like the BJD, JD(U), AIADMK, TRS and YSRCP all pledging their support to Kovind, his win was a foregone conclusion. Even opposition leaders like Praful Patel of the NCP admitted that he will be the next President of the country without any serious challenge.

3:30 pm: Prayers are going on at several places for the victory of Ram Nath Kovind. Here are pictures from Kanpur Dehat in Uttar Pradesh.
